Who it suits

Adventurous travellers and photographers. Staying overnight beats a rushed day trip.

Getting there

Fast boats leave Sanur and arrive at Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Seas can be rough; morning boats are usually calmer.

Getting around

Roads are steep and some are poor, so hire a driver rather than riding a scooter unless you are experienced.

Snorkelling

Manta Point and Crystal Bay are popular. Use licensed operators and do not touch the mantas.

Trade-offs

Facilities are simpler than on Bali, and the Kelingking descent is steep and dangerous; many people only view it from the top.
