Who it suits
Ubud suits travellers who want culture, yoga, food and green scenery rather than beaches. Couples, solo travellers and slow travellers tend to love it. Families do well in villas with pools on the outskirts.
Best areas inside Ubud
Central Ubud around Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman is walkable for cafés and the market. Penestanan and Sayan sit above the Campuhan and Ayung valleys with quieter villas. Tegallalang to the north is close to the famous rice terraces but you will need a scooter or driver.
Getting around
Traffic in central Ubud is heavy in the afternoon. Walking works in the centre, and Grab and Gojek are available though some local areas restrict app pickups. Many guests hire a driver for day trips to temples, waterfalls and Mount Batur.
What to see nearby
The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Ubud Palace, Campuhan Ridge Walk, Tegallalang rice terraces, Goa Gajah and Tirta Empul water temple are all within about 30 minutes.
Trade-offs
There is no beach, it rains more than the south coast, and the most popular streets are crowded. In exchange you get cooler evenings and some of the best-value guesthouses on the island.
